Description
Klipsch La Scala AL5 Floorstanding Speakers
The La Scala II delivers the same sparkling highs, extreme output and unsurpassed low distortion bass response as the original design. It also continues to utilise the same horn-loaded drivers as the Klipschorn, making it highly efficient and able to produce high volumes with undetectable distortion.
The reason these sound so live and realistic? THE HORNS. These have horn driven mids and highs and these are not the horns of yesterday (the 60s and 70s). No more hollow sound, no more sounding like a megaphone. Nope, todays horn speakers from Klipsch, at least the heritage line, sound like butter. Smooth, rich, huge and filled with presence. You can hear the breath, the cracks in the voice. Again, these speakers are NEVER fatiguing or at all bright even when driven to concert level.
The Klipsch Heritage range can sound explosive even at almost inaudible volumes. This lets the speakers be played at significantly lower volume without losing the sense of hearing real music. Don't think that this dynamics issue is trivial - it is what makes most speakers sound like speakers and not live music.Unlike most speakers, the Heritage range dynamics don't compress at super high volumes. These speakers slightly warm everything in the soundstage, making each element of the sound buttery, but not overwhelming any one instrument with too much coloration.
Product Features
When the La Scala first launched in 1963, audio pioneer Paul W. Klipsch offered it to Arkansas gubernatorial candidate Winthrop Rockefeller to use as a public address speaker, and he did use one on a train car during a subsequent campaign.
Despite its raw, unfinished appearance, the fully horn-loaded, three-way La Scala sounded so good people still wanted to put it in their living rooms.
Even though the La Scala II has adopted a more finished appearance, it still delivers the same sparkling highs, extreme output and unsurpassed low distortion bass response as the original design. It also continues to utilise the same horn-loaded drivers as the Klipschorn, making it highly efficient and able to produce high volumes with undetectable distortion.
- Fully horn-loaded, 3-way system with a folded-horn 15" woofer, 2" midrange and 1" tweeter compression drivers
- Capable of extreme output levels with ultra low distortion and astonishing dynamic range
- Available in a high-quality Black Ash, Cherry, or Walnut wood veneer finish
Now available in a variety of high-quality wood veneer finishes, including cherry, walnut and black ash, the La Scala II also includes a grille to cover the mid and high frequency horns. The bass horn cabinet walls are now constructed of 1-inch thick MDF rather than ¾-inch plywood to offer more support, decrease resonance and deliver cleaner bass response.
With a sensitivity rating of 105db/1 watt, you don’t need a lot of power to make the LaScala IIs rock, but you do need high-quality power. These speakers will pin you to the wall with ten watts per channel if you can even stand it that loud. The LaScala's deliver mega dynamic swings, even at low volume. The LaScalas kind of sneak up on you.
Also, if you think your LaScala's sound good on a solid state high quality amplifier, try switching to tube gear with those wonderful horns. It will bring the sound to a completely different level, and make those big boxes really sing for you!
The current Klipsch LaScala II is truly a great loudspeaker: few others do dynamics so well - we are talking real dynamics. And if you think big horn-loaded speakers don't image, well, you haven't heard the LaScala's.
