The First Record Played In Space - T Minus 33 1/3!

After 4 years of planning,Jack White's hair-brained scheme to play a record in space was achieved successfully on 30th July,2016.Seeking to fulfill White's long held ambition,White's record label Third Man Records has built a custom space-proof turntable called "the Icarus Craft" which was hoisted into the atmosphere attached to a high altitude balloon. The record set that was played was a gold plated master of Carl Sagan's single"A Glorious Dawn",released in 2010.It was the 3 millionth record pressed. When the balloon.....and turntable reached 94,000 feet the record can be seen and heard playing via several Go-Pro cameras and microphones mounted on the craft. The turntable even had turbulence control which lifted the tonearm off the record when the craft hit turbulence.

At 94,000 feet the high altitude balloon was burst and a parachute deployed to bring the craft back to earth safely.Even though it's descent was faster than anticipated,it arrived undamaged and still playing. We have included a video of the flight as this is truly a first!
