ATC SCM-19A active loudspeakers capture an exceptional balance of definition and musicality
Acoustic Transducer Company – ATC for less of a mouthful – came onto the scene over four decades ago in 1974, making their name as manufacturers of some of the highest quality speaker drivers to come out of Britain. Shortly after, ATC made the move to manufacturing complete speakers in addition to drive units, and have consistently come within range of the unattainable goal of creating a perfect speaker.
Like many British monitors, ATC’s loudspeakers are marked by their neutrality and precision, portraying sound with as little interference or colouring as possible. Unlike many British monitors, ATC loudspeakers manage to retain a captivating musicality and depth of sound, making them the perfect partner for detailed or background listening for hours on end.
Not content with sticking purely to loudspeaker design and manufacturing, ATC expanded their operations to include hi-fi components in 1996, adding a series of power amplifiers to their range. It is with this marriage of specialisations that ATC really excel. Over the course of two decades, ATC have managed to pair match their amplifiers and speakers together to such a degree of precision that no effort is wasted, no imperfection is present – nowhere is this more evident than with ATC’s range of active loudspeakers.
We are particularly impressed with the ‘entry-level’ active loudspeaker produced by ATC – the SCM-19A. Named such for each cabinet’s 19-litre capacity, the SCM-19A packs provides exceptional representation of frequencies across the spectrum considering it’s two-way design. The bottom section of the floorstanding cabinets is devoted to a precision Class A/B amplifier, sporting 182 watts per channel. Like the rest of ATC’s speakers, the SCM-19A is manufactured with simple aesthetics, but this is executed with such attention to detail that it is clear from the outset that one is dealing with a premium product.
Specs aside, the real test of the speaker is how it sounds. You’ll have to come into a Stereophonic shopfront to have a listen for yourself, but our listening sessions have revealed a speaker of detailed top-end, sweet mid-range, and an impressive, uncompromising sense of force and control.
